The anticipation about the recent awards show reached a fever pitch, notably after host Geoff Keighley posted an enigmatic photo of a desert monolith. The mystery has now been solved. The acclaimed developer is working on a fresh Divinity game.
Revealed to be Divinity, the game was presented with a bold trailer packed with memorable imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the literal descent into chaos.
A Different Direction
For those anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. Larian clarified that a follow-up to its beloved RPGs is not currently in development.
That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a next chapter of the main series. This phrasing hints that the team could be crafting a faster-paced experience rather than another turn-based title. At this moment, it remains theory, as only a cinematic trailer is available.
The Legacy of Divinity
The Divinity series is widely praised and many say it kicked off the modern wave of complex computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for detailed worlds, player agency, and deep class systems—traits that later were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its universe is classic fantasy, what makes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust bestowed upon the player.
While numerous modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is full of specialized paths only possible if you're playing as a specific type of character with a unique decision path.
The series is also famously flexible, allowing players to experiment in narrative and gameplay. Virtually all objectives can be solved in a variety of manners, often in surprising fashion.
- You might find an answer because you remembered something an animal companion shared.
- Or, you could defeat a foe by using the world itself in a unorthodox way.
The Journey Continues
It is this design philosophy that lead fans and critics to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games of all time. Now, players can look forward to another adventure in this legendary franchise.
